RESCUE OF A STRANDED DOLPHIN IN YUCATAN

  • This is the second stranded Dolphin so far this year that veterinarians and the specialists in marine mammals of Dolphin Discovery have to take care of.

Cancún, Quintana Roo, August 15th, 2017 - Yesterday, a Dolphin of the specie estenella, was rescued in the Yucatán beaches near the Mexican Armed Navy in Yucalpeten, between the beaches of Telchac Puerto and Uaymatun.

As part of the Stranding Committee, PROFEPA requested the help of veterinarians and specialists in marine mammals of Dolphin Discovery for its care and its rehabilitation. Therefore at 6:00 am, the dolphin was transferred by the Mexican Armed Navy to the deck in Playa Langosta in Cancún, arriving at 7:15 am to the Tortugranja (turtle’s farm) of Isla Mujeres for its checkup.

First response treatment was given to the Dolphin. It is very weak, and it is receiving assistance since the dolphin cannot swim by itself” said Dr. Roberto Sánchez, Director of Veterinary Medicine of Dolphin Discovery.

Also, it was informed that the cetacean is a male of approximately 70 kilograms and that a clinical analysis was made to determine the origin of the problem and be able to implement the corresponding treatment.
